Not quite. Blue Diamond isn't as far from Las Vegas as it used to be, but before all this growth it was considered a long ways out in the country. It is a township though, and I think they have a town board and all that stuff. It is not a part of Las Vegas though; not any more than Red Rock Canyon is a part of Las Vegas. It is more like Boulder City is to Las Vegas.

Yup...unincorporated Clark County. Not in the City of Las Vegas.

And to our new friend...Summerlin is only partially in the City of Las Vegas.

If I am not mistaken, it was a company town named after the gypsum plant nearby. The gypsum plant was of such high quality that they named the plant after the highest-quality gemstone: the blue diamond. At least, that's what it says out on the plaque outside the general store. ;-D

Blue Diamond is a very cool little berg. To get there you can leave Vegas by way of Charleston Blvd and drive through Red Rock Canyon, then return via the south end of the Vegas Strip. It is an entirely different atmosphere from Vegas. Some of the newer homes are very nice, while some of the older homes are getting shabby. The store, park, etc are well kept and picturesque. It is not a suburb in the normal sense like Summerlin. I consider a suburb where you can not officially tell you have left the populated area before you enter another populated area. This is not the case with Blue Diamond. I checked into building lots out there several years ago and they were considerably more expensive than LV, but then I don't know if they have come down much since the economic downturn and all of the repossessed props in Vegas. Anyway, it is an interesting little place and worth the drive to go look at it the next time you are out that way.
