Pretty much the only reason I use City-Data is to ask questions about the sex business in different cities. I'm 20 yrs old, and a couple weeks ago I was homeless. I'm spending my savings from working on rent right now and I can't afford to lose the rest, so I'm basically willing to move anywhere there is industry for sex work and public transportation.

A problem I've come into recently is not being able to find a job doing anything to get through the winter just to get me by before I can land a good gig as a stripper or something. I'm in Chicago right now, and I figure it's just the economy is THAT ****ed up here.

A bit about myself.....
I'm primarily interested in being a male or transexual stripper. Whatever will make more money, and stripper because it's the most reliable way to work. Ideally I would like to just do porn, but I've come to the conclusion that any notions of a post-90's porn industry off the internet (ppl like to say the SF Valley is still producing pornography) is completely fictional. On the internet, there's sex webcamming but most American sex webcammers are undercut by the cheap sex labor coming out of Eastern Europe right now. Sex webcamming makes very little money even though it has a false reputation of bringing in young girls tons of money. The only way you could really make money to live on through sex webcamming is if you were already established in the sex business and you're with one of those expensive sites with people with money backing your advertising.
When I was younger, like ages 16-19, I was too busy getting good grades and dreaming about college, when I should have been taking advantage of my youth and camwhoring/trapping on the internet so by the time I graduated I had enough of a reputation to make money through sex webcamming. Not that I'm using that as an excuse for not being able to succeed with it now, but as a social observation it's interesting to note how these High Schools pump the college dream into kids heads. The reality of the matter is, the college dream is not a dream for poor people. It's not a reality for people who grow up as poor and rough as I did. My whole life I thought I was just gonna be able to go to college after high school, and live. I even got like half of the AA done in high school through dual-enrollment....unfortunately shortly after I turned 18, my mom stopped getting social security and by the time I was 19, we lost our house. I turned 20 a couple months ago, and landed a labor intensive job on an oil pipeline but got laid off for the winter. I never want to do work like that again in my life, but I have enough money right now to try to live and that's how I'm at where I am right now.

^tl;dr story, yes...but for those who asked

well you guys are just a bunch of comedians aren't you.

Well see, that's just it. I would be a slapper and do it happily if $8/hr is minimum wage in Nevada liike it is in Illinois. When I say entry level jobs, I mean do you just get jobs liike that outta nowhere? I just imagine there's too many part-time college kids trying to do it, like everyone's slapping hours probably get cut.

Male or transexual stripper? Well, at least you're keeping your options open. Do you have detachable boobs?

Card slappers are done by illegal aliens. The minimum wage is $8.25 in Nevada with no benefits, $7.25 with benefits.

mod cut:

Vic, you may have better luck, and living cheaper / better going to Thailand,
where the morals are less strict, and you would be a 'novelty' being western
the Thai Bhat is like 33 to a $US so American money goes alot further in Thailand, and you seem to have nothing holding you down to one place

Just a thought
Jonathan

Sorry but that is garbage. Actually being poor gives you an advantage. Apply for Pell grants and government help. The group that has the toughest time is those who come from middle class families where they make just a little too much to qualify for government help yet the parents in no way can help pay.

My husband and I paid our own way through college, we had nothing and even ate rice and beans sometimes but we made it. My husband worked full time until the last year (and went to school full time), when I worked part time and we took out a student loan for the last year. If you really wanted to go to college you could do it. It takes hard work and going without luxury, but it's possible.

Yup, a big +1 to this. I went to an Ivy for a total of about $8,000 out of pocket across all four years. This was not some crazy scholarship either - it was just straight-up need-based financial aid. If admissions accepts you, most good schools will find the money to make it work for you/your-family.

Of course now I have a good-sized mortgage's worth of student loans, and I worked while in school, but the notion that poor kids can't go to good schools is usually borne out of ignorance, or is simply an excuse for sustained mediocrity.
