Doe anyone have any information regarding mines that are open to the public. My wife wants to prospect for semi precious stones as a hobby. Evidently she has decided she wants to make jewelry when we retire in LV?

You can find them in the southern Nevada desert on your own, but the mines that let you pick your own are mostly up north and in Utah I do believe. Could be wrong, but that's where my girls have gone. Have you tried a Google search? I think you'll find several.

Be prepared to do lots of driving, and probably a 4x4 would be handy, and probably necessary, in some cases. Here's a couple of links I found.

Saw a show on TV - Bonanza mine, Virgin Valley, Nevada. This should get you started for an internet search

I think that would be fun to try too. I've done some reading and it looks great.

We went to a beading show not long ago, and there was a family from a turquoise mine up near Elko that had a booth. They were very reasonable too. I think you can go to the mine and pick through the tailings or something. I saw a piece on Nevada Outdoors about that not long ago.

Of course, you find the mines all over the Southwest. I think Kingman is supposed to have turquoise mines.

Did you all know that mining is the second largest employer in Nevada? Not that I agree that we should be allowing companies from Canada to mine all of our gold.
