jfkIII clearly does not work in the industry.

bmw336xi, i would suggest doing some research. the website lists many of the employers who recruit from unlv and cornell students. many hotels won't hire regular MBA's for many positions, they place a huge emphasis on hotel school. and a bachelors degree just won't cut it unless you're content to reach a certain level and stay there. you can reach a comfortable level of pay without any high school education in the hospitality world, but there is a lot of money to be gained if you can get the education and make it to the top.

LOL this is almost funny... I have an undergrad in hotel management from UNLV and also an MBA from UNLV. I worked in the Las Vegas hotel industry in everything from answering phones to front desk to night audit to sales & marketing analyst to revenue and analytics management (I did both small hotels off the strip and huge luxury casino hotels on the strip).

The only thing that my undergrad in hotel management from UNLV gave me is that it opened the door for me to the hotel industry, so I was able to get one of my first jobs because of it... but not directly. Why? Because I met enough people that helped me throughout my career while at UNLV. Those people made phone calls, etc. That's the only thing you obtain from that degree. If I had not gone to UNLV, I would not have met these people. That's all. You will realize that in Vegas, a great percentage of employees in management don't even have college degrees.

My MBA? I loved it, but as soon as I got it, I moved out of Vegas and started my own company and I'm now in international commodity trade.

In summary, if you have an undergrad in business that's all you need. What you REALLY need is to start meeting people that can open doors for you in Vegas. Where will you meet them? Maybe at UNLV... but go for a 1 or 2 semester certificate in management or something, don't waste so much time getting a master's in hotel, it's useless per se.

What are your thoughts on the Masters of Science in Hospitality Administration program at UNLV? I was going to do the dual MBA program, but I am thinking I will do the Masters in Hospitality first and then go to a top 30 school for the MBA. Seems that the MBA from UNLV isn't worth much beyond Nevada.
