Which of these would cost less in Las Vegas?
  1. Boiling a quantity of water by using a gas stove
  2. Boiling that quantity of water in a microwave oven

One uses gas, the other electricity.

This an academic exercise? A scientific experiment?

Loosely a kilowatt hour of electricity costs 11 cents

That is equivalent to 3412 BTUs which is .034 Therms which costs (@ .89 per therm) which is .0303 dollars. So gas is cheaper by 3.6 times.

One can however continue the joy by considering efficiency. On a straight stove the efficency is likely not high..but a microwave is pretty terrible. So that likely increases the advantage of gas.

I would go for #1 also. I did a test once in the summer just to see what the difference would be cooking with gas for every meal versus using the microwave. The difference was a $20-$25 a month savings in electric. Saved less the times I baked, since the ac kept kicking on from the heat.

I was curious about this. About the same cost as Los Angeles, the last time I checked. Thanks Olecapt

$25 of your electric bill each month comes from use of your microwave?

We have two. And they are used daily, several times a day. Mostly not by me.
