Hello all. I just had an offer accepted on a bank-owned property and I'm in my "due diligence" period. I have an inspection scheduled but I also have to figure out the cost of replacing the kitchen, doorknobs, hinges, etc. My main concern is the cost of kitchen cabinets and countertops. I'm trying to make it as cost effective as possible, and I'd appreciate any wisdom I can find here. I've been to Lowe's and they can only do 30" uppers and quoted around $4500 without installation, which was a bit pricier than I'd hoped, especially since I need 40" uppers. I've attached a picture of the kitchen area with the existing island table.

I also need to buy/install all the appliances, so I went to RC Willeys and I could get some pretty good deals there. But if anyone has better ideas on these issues and getting most of the place re-painted, bring it on! Please note that I am not handy at all, whenever I attempt a DIY project I end up weeping into my whiskey.

Since your not handy you might try some licensed and bonded home renovaters to get bids and see if that would be better for you.

I have never used these companies but I get their adds sent to me all the time. Make sure to ask for references and make sure they are license and bonded.

That's not bad at all!

There's a wholesale cabinet place up close to Nellis and Craig where I got my cabinets. GBP or something like that. Reasonable and 2 years later they still look nice and are working fine.

I got my handles/hardware on Ebay.

Do the painting yourself. It's easy when the place is empty. Get lots of dropcloths. Give yourself a few days to mud and do repairs, then paint.

How well do the new cabinets match the existing ones? Maybe you can find out who the builder subcontracted to put the cabinets in and get a deal?

That's some pretty high end, raised panel cabinetry you got there. It won't come cheap.

With so much of it gone, would it be cheaper to just replace all of it than try to match the few pieces that are still left and also have to find matching counters?
Seems like you might find an overstock of something else much cheaper than special ordering the match to the existing cabinets at full list price.

JMO...I would think most certainly. There isn't that much left to rip out. Try and save the island top to use with the new cabinets.

I would replace the whole thing. No way you are going to match the existing cabinetry without spending big $.

Default Situation Update

The painting will be done professionally, since I'm re-painting the whole place. I now think 30" uppers are actually preferable since I've found pics of other models and the 30"s allow more natural light and leave room for some nice stuff to display along the top. I understand the expense in trying to match that one existing taller cabinet, so I'll probably yank it altogether or relocate it to where the refrigerator footprint is, stain it to match new cabinets, and replace the doors. Then I'll have the base of the island stained to match as well. The pattern need not be an exact match.

So here's the next question. If you wanted to design this kitchen to look very cool by changing the appliance plan, where would you put everything? That existing cabinet held a double oven, which I might not even want.

Pick your appliances and locations, dishwasher is under island and stays there. Have fun, there are no bad ideas, except using T-N-T .

Here is a list of appliance options for consideration:

Double oven
Cooktop (gas)
Refrigerator (french door maybe, definitely freezer on bottom)
Microwave
Range
Any idea not included

Creative ideas as far as what type of cabinets to use would be great as well. I've seen an upper wine rack that I think would be a nice add. Appliances will be stainless and cabinets will be dark to match or go with the floor. Walls will be light.

Here's a pic of the same layout of another house model with standard install. Please refer to photo at top of thread for the original photo. Thanks all.
