We just moved our grandma from Japan to Vegas and are trying to find something of that will help the transition:

especially a Japanese speaking catholic church, food, japanese stores, etc..

also a Japanese speaking doctor is needed.

Thanks!

There's Japan Mini Mart in a mini mall right next to the Starbucks on West Flamingo (located next to Palms Casino). It's a small family run Japanese store, there's a community bulletin board there too which lists different Japanese events going on in Vegas. Also there is another smaller Japanese store on Maryland Parkway and East flamingo located in the Target mall. They sell the same stuff and also have local Japanese events community paper. There's also Seafood City, on Maryland Parkway near Boulevard mall. It sells Asian groceries, mostly Filipino, but I've found it's diverse in Japanese imported foods as well. I'm only familiar with those, and they are all on the eastside of town. Being part Japanese myself, I can say that Japanese culture is a bit lacking out here, but I'm sure she'll have no problem adujusting. Hope she enjoys Vegas!

Thanks for the help,

Didn't know about the one near the palms. Good idea about the community paper though, definitely will pick one of those up. I think the closest we found as far as food has been Togoshis and she seemed to like it.

I do agree, it is extremely lacking considering Nevada has 16% asian, we need more of a Japanese community, just like J-Town in LA.

You may want to contact and join either or both the JASN (http://www.jasnlasvegas.org/about-us.php - broken link) or the JACL of Las Vegas and express your concerns for better community representation.

I just recently moved my Japanese mother from Cali (Originally from Nagasaki) to Las Vegas, can anyone tell me of a good Japanese community that she can join? I see the posting above about JACL and JASN, does anyone have any experience with either? She is 76 years old, and doesn't know any other Japanese speaking people in Vegas, I would love to get her involved in something in a Japanese community.

Has anybody been to the Las Vegas Bon Odori?
Japanese-City.com | Las Vegas Buddhist Sanga Bon Odori (Sat only)

I'm curious what the event was like, Seattle's were always so much fun to visit.

I'm japanese(well half) and I need more info also. I have met a couple more folks here, but have not found a centralized community as yet. i you are Buddhist, I might be able to lead you to a community for japanese.

unfortunately, I have found that 99% of the restaurants and stores being operated here as "Japanese" are in fact Korean. you can go to the asian market on durango and flamingo for all thinks though(even though it is Chinese operated). they have pretty much anything you could want from any asian nation.

There's a Christian church, the Las Vegas Japanese Community Church. She could at least make some friends there, I would think. I've never heard of a Japanese mass though. As a Catholic myself I think that would be quite interesting.
