Hi all,

We're coming in mid June to check out Maryville for retirement within about 15 months. Maybe someone can help me with answers that could narrow our search. I'm sure that like most towns there are areas more senior-friendly than others. We love kids but don't want to be in another development, though we also don't want a 'senior's only' community. We won't be job hunting nor do we need school info. We're looking to scout a home with a minimum of two acres but still within city limits, or at least that qualifies for city services. Which areas of Maryville are best for this and which wouldn't meet our criteria? Can you tell me which developments or areas to steer clear of (we have some in our town, as most towns do) so that we can concentrate on which are better for us? Also, does Maryville provide recycling pickup along with trash pickup (I know trash pickup depends on whether or not you're within city limits)?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm not sure if a 2 acre lot is going to be so easy to find in Maryville city.

There's a small section of the 37804 area code in Maryville you may want to avoid, although calling it a bad area would be pretty comical. I would describe that area as where Maryville city meets Eagleton and Aloca, east of S. Hall Rd, west of Everett Rd and north on Broadway until you hit Eagleton. Don't rule out the entire area code though, there are some houses with big lots, in the city, as you travel east on Sevierville Rd from the aforementioned area.

I grew up just outside the city down Sevierville Rd, and I'm almost certain we had some city services.

That's all I got.

Thank you so much, VolDude! I've written down the area code and road names. We'd like to be within city limits but if we can get city services and a few acres just outside the limits then that's even better. Is internet cable or dsl available and is one company a better choice than the other? We have both here but the cost of cable is through the roof so we currently use dsl.

In our area of Blount County, Charter is your only choice. However, satellite TV is also available.

Thanks, Suzanne. I can only hope Charter is more reasonably priced for internet service than Comcast. We have Comcast for tv cable but use (much cheaper) dsl for internet.

I've been house-hunting in Maryville for over a year, and can only think of 1 home for sale with 2 acres in the city limits (it's on Old Niles Ferry Rd). However, I haven't looked in 37804 at all.

I should also mention that Royal Oaks is a great neighborhood for retirees. There are not many children in the whole subdivision, lots of EXCELLENT views, many homes on the golf course, but the drawback is TINY lots. Many are under .25 acre. I love it there, and have looked at MANY homes there for the views and beauty of the subdivision, but have children who would be lonely.

As far as recycling goes, that's a GREAT question!! Will someone please enlighten us???

I told you the truth about Royal Oaks huh? Glad you came and saw it for yourself!

Recycling is not done at curbside but there are PLENTY of community recycling centers. We just got a notice yesterday in the mail from the city. Get this - so much for Green Living, starting May 1 ALL trash in your trash can MUST be in plastic bags!! Hrmph!

Yes, you were absolutely correct!!! I still love it, though!

Thanks for the recycling info!! We use centers here also, so that's no big deal! I don't like the whole plastic bag thing, though

Glad you like it! Nice community, my ex lives there. The Oaks Dining Room is a second home to us and owned by our good friends and my sons best friends parents. I love their bar area; reminds me of the olden days "club rooms". The HOA is very nit picky and the retirees have tons of time to make sure that everyone is following the "rules". Oh, and the speed bumps in the neighborhood......... they were "strategically" placed in there right in front of HOA Board member homes. I was at the Maryville Planning Commission meeting two weeks ago and a block of new homes was approved to be built in there so more construction to go in there.

Are you working at BMH or another place? Let me know when you get here; I would love to help in anyway that I can.

I interviewed at BMH and they called and told me that decided not to hire new grads, besides their scholarships. However, I had already accepted a spot at FS Regional, in Oncology, which was my first choice from the beginning.

I will be there BY 6/1, as I start 6/15. I thought we had a deal on a house, but I'm not so sure now. The seller is being very stubborn over 3K. I do have a rental condo in ROYAL OAKS lined up as a backup. And, I'm still looking!! I missed out on a GREAT place in Westcliff, being too far away.
