after visiting nashville and experiencing the honky tonk broadway and 2nd street scene, i am wondering if there are any live music mini-nashvilles in knoxville. overall knoxville was the superior city with less congestion and residential hsingle family prices 20% or so less than nashville.

We’re newbies to the area, but enjoy seeking out live music, so thought I’d throw in my 2 cents. You won’t find anything near what Nashville has to offer, it’s a music Mecca, but Knoxville’s Market Square, Gay Street and Old Town areas have several different live music venues. Of course, there are other venues around town, but these areas are all within very close proximity and can be safely walked.

Drift Away, as newbies, what are your thoughts on your new city? We want to relocate from rural WV in Hopefully one year or less. Any advice? Thanks!!

We like it here. We weren’t wanting a big city, but a place with enough interesting things to see and do and the Knoxville area fit the bill for us. We’re youngish retirees, so we may be looking for different things than you, not sure. We actually live outside the City, but enjoy going downtown to various events. We’ve found some pretty good music around and have always felt safe walking around downtown. The area offers beautiful mountains, nice lakes nearby and lots of greenways. There’s plenty of shopping options too. It’s kinda the best of all worlds to us. I got lots to learn, but feel free to ask questions and I’ll do my best to give you a newbies perspective.

I wanted to point out something for the newbies. It's Old City, not Old Town.

There are several places to find good, local music. Here is just a few.

Events Calendar - *** and Reel

Home - Mill And Mine

The Mill and Mine is owned by Knoxville's own Ashley Capp's. Never heard of him? He's the guy that started Bonnaroo. He also created the nationally-acclaimed Big Ears Festival featuring avant-garde music. It is routinely covered by the New York Times, Rolling Stone, the New Yorker and the Wall Street Journal.

However, long before Big Ears began, Knoxville was known for WDVX radio on a worldwide basis. They live broadcast a musical performance at noon, six days a week, at the Visitors Center and it's free.

Many large universities put on a lot of live entertainment. Im exploring the area but not explored this option? Is it something UT does and the community goes to see or more for just students?

My favorite places for live music in Knoxville are

Preservation Pub/Scruffy City Hall, they have music every night of the week in a nice atmosphere with good food

Pilot Light, they are a small hole in the wall not for profit venue in the Old City with a lot of up and coming artists passing through

The International, I like the venue better than M&M and I've seen some great shows here over the years and they still have my favorite genres playing regularly

Default Music Type?

Just curious about the type of music is in Knoxville area? Any Jazz clubs/places? We are older folks looking for a nice night out. No rap! My husband is into jazz and other modern music.
