We are on vacation in Sevierville right now. My wife & I were first here in 2000 and last here around the winter of 2004 or 2005. We had thought about moving to the area since then, but boy has it changed! This year we are here with my parents and they keep saying Pigeon Forge reminds them of Las Vegas. Not promising. Even my wife has said it has lost its appeal for her. Don't get me wrong, the things we've done, we've liked... hit some places in Gatlinburg, hit the Dixie Stampede yesterday, and even shopped at Kroger. Our cabin is higher in the hills than I had expected, and although it is nicely secluded, I'm not enjoying commuting the winding roads as much as I thought I would. I just want y'all to know where I'm coming from.

Sunday for church we drove through Maryville and into Knoxville which took about an hour. We even spent some time for lunch around the Market Square area. My wife liked it, so I'd like to look closer to Knoxville... how close to Knoxville can we get before losing the view of the mountains? Figuring we are foothills people, what areas should we be looking at?

Thank you for your input!

There are houses in Knoxville with incredible views of the mountains. I think the distance makes for a nice perspective. But you have to search them out, they will be on the ridgetops and southeast slopes. Fortunately you can search for mountain view on MLS but you absolutely have to check it out in person as the quality of views will vary, especially when trees are in the picture.

Fall is the best time for house hunting because if there is a lot of moisture in the air, you won't see the mountains no matter where you are.

Commercial announcement: I know someone who has one of those mountain view homes for sale on Buffat mill rd at Pleasant View.

Another option is Maryville, which is closer to the mountains and thus will have views a few more days of the year, but again you have to be selective.
Kodak is another option but it is very rural, not many commercial amenities unless you are heading towards Sevierville.

Maryville isn't called the foothills for nothing.

Mountain views are all over east TN, like previously said you have to be in the right spot. There are also mountain views of the smaller Cumberland mountains to the northwest of Knoxville. They are smaller but at over 3500 feet they still are very beautiful. Something to think about if the craziness of PF and Gatlinburg are too much for you is to look at Blount county. Much quieter, even Townsend which is a tourist town is nothing like the crazy world of PF. You get all the Smoky mountain views there without the traffic and insanity. Even West Knoxville has nice mountain views in many places. Tell your realtor you want a mountain view and they know where to look.

Look at real estate in the Walland, TN area. Walland is between Townsend and Maryville and there are plenty of mountain views. I think Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are best visited mid-week in the slow season.

It interesting how Gatlinburg has changed since 1949. Once the music starts in this video the embedded photos are from Gatlinburg and the surrounding area in 1949 (except for the one of 1949 UT in Knoxville).

Pigeon Forge essentially did not exist in 1949.

One thing to consider is the closer you get to the mountains there is more of a likelihood that Chilhowee mountain will obstruct the view of the higher peaks.

But still, lots of great views in Blount County as well as Knox and Sevier. Seymour is worth considering if you want to be close to the attractions in PF but not have to face the traffic on an everyday basis.
