You're killing me artemis. I need to make a run over there for some kolaches and hot chicken.

If they are going to be anywhere in Knoxville, they will be here, and I suspect the chances are pretty good.

What's the name of the donut place you mentioned in Gray? I'm with you, ljay42. A town this size SHOULD have a kolache place. I'm a transplanted Texan and I sure do miss kolaches. And a big ol' mess of gizzards would hit the spot, too!

Hey French - yeah, you know my pain.

The place in gray is:

It's run by a couple of Vietnamese transplants from Texas. Nice folks.

Get by the place I mentioned here in town for some gizzards. Good stuff!

Thanks for the info, ljay. After reading your post a couple of weeks ago, I looked up donut places in the Grey/Johnson City area. I found a great place called The Donut House. It's also owned by an Asian couple transplanted from Texas. The kolaches look identical to the ones pictured in the link you posted. They have an amazing selection of donut and delicious kolaches.

I'll try the place you suggested for gizzards. I tried Lee's Famous Fried Chicken and they were pretty bad. The gizzard itself was nice & tender, but the coating was TERRIBLE! Soggy and very salty. Not crispy at all.

I say we get together and open our own kolache place in Knoxville. Bet we could make a killing! LOL

I think that's the same place in Grey. The name was changed and I don't know if I provided the old name or new but that has to be the same people.

You are spot on about Lee's - last time I was in I asked them to cook a fresh batch of gizzards, thinking that their holding process made the coating soft. Nope...the fresh batch came out just like the old batch.

I stopped in a couple of independent donut shops around the area and while making a purchase, asked the owner(s) if they had considered putting something savory on the menu like kolaches or sausage rolls....NOPE...didn't even get to finish the question so apparently not something they are interested in doing. With all the meat biscuits being sold around here in the mornings it would seem that branching out a bit might be a good idea for those guys.
