I finally went in the Speed Art Museum today (after walking past it thousands of times) and I was amazed at the size and variety of their collection. BTW, this museum is FREE

They have...

- Egyptian artifacts (including a mummified Ibis) dating up to 3,000 BC
- Dozens of Plains Indians artifacts dating from 1860 to 1900. (I was especially touched by a back worn baby cradle that included a 'toy' turtle)
- Dozens of Roman cremation vases and even a full size coffin dating from 150 to 300 ad
- large variety of original copies of many paintings

Some images from the Speed Museum's webpage

It's too bad they keep the Native American stuff tucked away in the back of the basement area. Should be front-and-center, but I'm sure they have space issues.

We visited there a few years ago and were very impressed as well. And it's free! Can't beat that.

I haven't been there since I was in college, over 25 yrs ago. I was impressed then. Thanks for sharing. I'll have to revisit it the next time I travel to KY.
