I believe that the climate would be fine for us.

However, there is still the issue of the "Vehicle Usage Tax" and it seems like our documents do not show the information required .... Would just be a lot of additional expenses if we had to pay those 6 % for both vehicles.

When I first moved here in 1998, I was shocked at how much it cost to register a car. I had a used Escort, and it was over 300.00 to register the first time, then it went down due to it's age. Now I have a newer car so I am back up near 300.00 again, and this year it will be 265.00, so it has gone down some. In my county they charge, State, county, city, school, health (and mental health), library and ext services taxes and those add up. The county school tax alone is 92.00. I just got my registration notice so I am reading off of it. So reading directly off my card I got in the mail it breaks down like this: State 75.38
County 26.30, County schools 92.63, Library 5.03, Health 4.69, Ext service (?) 4.25. Mental health 2.68 and city tax 33.55 Then registration fee is 21.00. So it's the other taxes that make it high. It's interesting that the school tax is the highest. Plus they charge an additional 2.00 if you mail in your renewal! They have my vehicle worth at 16,750. Makes you want to spit. So for someone who has never lived here, that can be quite a shock if you come from a state that doesn't charge that much. Some counties could be more or less then this. I live up in Northern KY.

Default Kentucky vehicle usage tax

Wondering as follow up on the 6% vehicle usage tax.....is that tax when you yearly register your vehicle the only tax you pay for your vehicle or is there an additional tax on vehicle due at same time you pay property taxes?

I ask, because we are considering retirement in MY, live in VA now. Here we average $45 to $60 year per vehicle to DMV for vehicle registration, depending on vehicle. But, each December we pay a personal property tax on vehicles, and separate billing for real estate taxes...we have county only, live rural now.

Anyway, on vehicle tax due in Dec. We pay just over $800 a year for 3 vehicles, 2 of which are 2004 year with over 170K miles.

Just want to clarify if in MY you pay once or twice vehicle tax. Thanks

The vehicle tax for me would be high too. I also wonder if car insurance is also high in KY? The other thing I read in a post about KY was that there was a secret tax or something on your insurance I think. Could not find much out about what it was. These are the things that I need to consider before coming out there to look. Have one friend that has moved to Ky and another one is in a year. I am in Ca., small ski town, so the winters would not be a problem. Just want to find somewhere to retire that is cheaper. A 2br 800sf house is 200k on a 2500sf lot where I live, so I need to go somewhere else. Thank you.

I know that my car insurance rates here in KY near Cincinnati are high. And I have a clean driving record. My rates are as low as half in other areas and typically at least 30 percent lower in areas where I've either lived previously or ran quotes just to compare what I am paying right now in Kenton County. Bear in mind the cost to register a car includes the property tax for the car. That being said, it is comparable to other places I've lived. I was paying over $500 in property tax for new cars (average Toyota Corolla and Yarus) in Missouri when I lived near Kansas City or in the immediate KC area. That cost does go down of course as the car ages.

Something else came to mind that you should research before moving. Homeowners Insurance. I can't believe how high my rates have been here. Literally three times as high as when I owned a home in Missouri and also New York many years ago. Not sure why either. Insurance costs are killing me here.
