My husband and I are in our late fifties and are looking for a place to retire. We have about 100,000 to spend and are looking for a three bedroom, two bath home, between 1600 and 1800 square feet. We like a small town feeling, but would like to be reasonably close to some major grocery stores. Although we are older we really want to live in a family friendly community. We'd prefer a one story house, but are open to different types of houses. Although we are older we want to live around families with children as we will be leaving our entire family behind in Florida. We'd really like to have neighbors that like to get to know each other and do these together. We're both retired so we don't have to worry about finding a place to work. This may be silly, but I'd like to live in an area where I can have a gas stove. I love to cook and all we have here in Florida is electric. I hope I gave enough information, and would appreciate any replies. Thank you the Smiths.

Anybody who reads this thread very often (and welcome to C-D, tak!) know that I'm big on western Kentucky. I live in Mayfield Home and you wouldn't have any trouble finding the house you're looking for in this area. I looked on Find Real Estate, Homes for Sale & Houses for Rent - realtor.com® for 3 br, 2 bath homes under $100,000 and found 35 in Mayfield. Not too sure about the 3 br 2 bath for $14,900 though. lol 3-Bedroom Mayfield, KY Homes for Sale - realtor.com® There is a small town feeling here. As far as groceries, we have two chain groceries (Food Giant and Save a Lot) in town and have a new one, Ruler's (a branch of Kroger's) opening in January. And, of course, that's besides Walmart. lol But quite a few people like to go to Paducah, about 25 miles away, for their major shopping, dining, etc. And we're about 40 miles from Metropolis, Illinois, the "official home of Superman" and the closest riverboat casino. (My wife and I used to go once a year, with each of us taking $25. When that was gone, we left!) There is also Murray, Ky. Murray, Kentucky - MyMurray.com Murray was voted Best Little Small Town in America, 2012, by Rand McNally and USA Today, Best of the Road. Several years ago Murray was voted best place to retire in the US. Murray is home of Murray State University Murray State University on the Web which has several awards and recognition. (Go to their web site and click on MSU mission andquick facts and scroll down.)
Murray is about 18 miles from Kentucky Lake Kentucky Lake: Maps, History, Photos & More | Learn About Kentucky Lake, Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area Land Between The Lakes, and Lake Barkley LakeBarkley.org. Besides everything there is to do on the water, the LBL is 170,000 acres of hiking, biking, 4 wheeling, camping and sightseeing with no stores, homes, or billboards to block your view.
Hope you find a good place to settle down. I think you'll find plenty of friendly people in these towns I've told you about. I've always said there are 120 counties in Kentucky and there's something good for everybody somewhere in each county.

When we started our search for a home in KY, we honed in on the Bluegrass area and I started with a property search on www.LBAR.com. It allows you to search by county, price, size of house/property, etc.

Good luck and welcome to Kentucky!!

I would look most closely at Bardstown, KY. Great small town atmosphere, historic, friendly, and gorgeous. ANd it is only minutes away from Louisville should you need big city amenities.

Also, the local hospital, Flaget, is very very good for a small community hospital, and they can fly sick patients out to University. If you are older, this is SOOOOOO important.

Thank you Peter. It wouldn't let me send a private message. lol We had also looked within 20 miles of Paducah, but again I don't know the area. It's really hard to know where to go when your not knowledgeable of an area. We're trying to narrow it down to one area of the state, so when we go up there to stay for two weeks and look around we won't be wasting time. I also thank you for the inside information you gave me. That's so important.

Were just trying to find out where we want to look for a house in Kentucky. Everyone's been very helpful. We go to remax.com to look where people suggested and then if we find homes we like we google the area to find out all we can about it. It's a long process, but I'm sure it will be worth it in the end.
