My husband and I are moving to KC in August for him to complete school and we need some advice on safe areas of town to live in. He is going to school at Cleveland Chiropratic College in Overland Park so we would like to be close to the school and are looking to rent for about $1000 a month.

Lots of apartments in Overland Park - nice ones - and you can definitely get an apartment for $1000. The area around where Cleveland Chiropractic is has older apartments. Personally, I like BRAND NEW or near new stuff, so if it were ME, I'd look south of there, south of 119th, at newer apartments. Here's a link to Overland Park apartments at apartmentguide.com:

The Woods of Cherry Creek are supposed to be very nice. They are at about 127th and Metcalf. Wouldn't be too much of a drive to Cleveland Chiropractic and you'd be across the street from a Saint Luke's South Hospital, near Costco, and near all kinds of shopping and restaurants, and in a nice area as well. But lots of apartment complexes out that way. I've just heard good things about Cherry Creek so thought I'd mention it. I've never seen the inside.

One of the best communities in Johnson County is the Homestead Apartments. I know people that live there, have lived there myself, and know people that work there if you're interested.

We are looking more to rent houses, so neighborhood advice would be great. Thanks!

Finding a house to rent for $1000 might be more of a challenge. An apartment definitely. House - depends. You probably won't find a house in the newer parts of Johnson County for $1000. You could try Merriam, Mission, Roeland Park, maybe Westwood, Overland Park, Prairie Village, Shawnee, Lenexa. Try searching Kansas City Craigslist for rent section and put in the different cities listed (all are part of the "Shawnee Mission" area). You can find a house for $1000 and probably a decent one but much easier to find a decent apartment for that price. Or put in Johnson County to search. Cleveland College is going to be in Johnson County/Shawnee Mission. You can find cheaper housing in Kansas City, Missouri but some of us prefer Kansas/Johnson County.

There really isn't an "unsafe" area of Johnson County but each neighborhood has its own personality/type of residents.

Overland Park you will not find a "nice" home for $1000 a month. You could easily find a very good apartment/townhome for that price.

Like luzianne said: Look into the smaller areas like Shawnee, Merriam, Mission, R.P., etc. I think the houses you would find will be decently small.

If you go to craigslist then click on the kansas: kansas city, mo one.

I gave you a headstart:
classifieds - craigslist=

Good luck.
