Hi,
My hubby and I are traveling soon to KC,MO. This will be a kid free trip. Very sad to leave them home, very excited to have adult time! Can you give me suggestions for better-than-chain restaurants that are NOT kid-friendly? We will be staying near the airport. Willing to travel to downtown or other places that are 30 min away or less. I am thinking trendy, hip, great food, great adult atmosphere. Please let me know if I will need reservations too. We are not picky, like steak houses, sushi, and ethnic places. Also, tell me a few can't be missed BBQ places. (we will probably come out twice to scout for neighborhoods and houses). Thanks!

For a fun evening out with great Greek food, entertainment and drinks, try Tasso's. Not sure how long a drive it is from the airport, but worth it. Anyone know how long it would take to get there?

I think I can definitely chime in about the steak restaurants. The very best IMO is the Majestic, in downtown KC. I'm not sure if they still have it, but they used to have a live blues band on the lower level.

Second best for steak: Hereford House, also near downtown but a little bit more south from Majestic.

About BBQ: People here in KC are very opinionated about BBQ, as we DO have the very best BBQ in the USA. You will get a variety of opinions about all the BBQ places. My favorite is Jack Stacks, just on the southern edge of downtown. Casual but nice. Next best would be Oklahoma Joe's. Very casual, but soooo good. You would have to go farther south from downtown, though. It is one-half of a combination gas station/quick-stop kind of building on the corner of 47th & Mission Road, and it is ALWAYS busy and crowded. In this area 47th Street is the dividing line between Johnson County, KS and Wyandotte County, KS., but still just a few blocks from Jackson County, MO. Yes, being on the state line does present some confusion for out-of-towners. (Please correct me if I'm wrong about that dividing line, Kansas City.)

If "real" spring ever gets here to stay, I think you will like it here. Enjoy your trip.

An addition to my previous post:

Regarding reservations: Majestic, yes, as nearly as I can recall. The others no.

Regarding ethnic: a good Mexican food restaurant is Manny's on Southwest Boulevard. Busy, casual, great food. No reservations required, but you will probably have to wait for a table.

Hope this helps!

Yes, thanks for the recommendations. Coming from out of town it is always good to know where the locals go!

What about the Power and Light District people post about? Any trendy, hot restaurants there that we should consider?

Power and Light District is almost all chain bars and restaurants. There is a great place by the P&L called Grinders. A dive bar with great food, it was on the Food channel a few months ago. Also just south of the airport is LC's hamburgers. I think it has been around since the 60's. Great for lunch.

check out Authur Bryants on the Plaza or the Cheesecake Factory Yummy! GATES has the best BBQ in KC! I just moved from there to Houston TX, would have loved to stay. I love KC! simple and very frinedly people. Look in Blue Springs for homes!!! A great community with quick access to down town, GREAT SCHOOLS!

L.C.'s barbeque is fantastic. It's a hole in the wall. It's on Blue Parkway. Not the best neighborhood, unfortunately. Not to be confused with L.C.'s hamburgers. Different company, I think.
Of course, there's tons of places on the Plaza and Westport. Waldo's great, too. City Market, Crossroads, P&L... all those neighborhoods. There's interesting stuff in the Crown Center, also. Rudy's in Westport is great for Mexican food. Southwest Boulevard is lined with restaurants, most of them are Mexican food places.
Parkville is a short drive from the airport. Really neat downtown area, with a handful of restaurants.

Although most of the restaurants in the P & L district are technically chains I think calling them that is a little misleading. None of them are large, national chains like Applebee's or Chili's. They are lesser known chains that have only a handful of locations nationwide.
