I was looking up some of the schools I attended as a child, to see how they compared to some in the area we are moving to, and found that they no longer exist. I went to West Antioch Elementary and Antioch Middle School, in the Shawnee Mission/Overland Park area. Anyone know what happened and why they closed down? Were they so bad the lost accreditation, like some of the KC, MO schools? Just curious.

No, Shawnee Mission Schools NEVER lost accreditation. Some schools closed and merged with other schools because of declining enrollment in Shawnee Mission, and I think they were just trying to save money by having fewer schools open. And in some cases new schools were built and kids diverted to the new schools and the old schools closed.

Shawnee Mission School District always was and still is fine and has a good reputation. No worries about that!

Okay. I wondered. I thought I went to pretty decent schools, so was surprised to learn they are no longer there! It's so strange to think they don't even exist. Ah well...

Demographics and shifting enrollment numbers dictated the closures and consolidations there. You have to remember that JOCO inside the 435 loop had a very young population during the height of the post war era housing boom, extending into the 1980s in the western portion of the district. The area now is demographically balanced and has a far more even concentration of elderly, middle aged people, and younger people.

That's interesting and I was a kid in the 80's so I guess that makes sense.
