I'm graduating from nursing school this December and starting to look for jobs. I go to school at the University of Iowa, and am originally from Des Moines, IA. I'm looking to branch out and live away from home for a while and am looking into Chicago, Minneapolis, and Kansas City. I'm 24 and single, and looking for a place where it would be easy to meet new people. Also I want to move to a place where there is a lot to do and you cannot get bored.

I think I want to work in labor and delievery, but also like the NICU and the emergency department. I don't really know that much about the hospitals in Kansas City and want to make sure that I am not looking into a hospital that is in a bad part of the city. Also I don't know much about the cost of living in Kansas City, and the salaries of a starting RN with a BSN.

Please give me some insight into Kansas City and a nursing career for a new grad. Any other information you might have for someone who is "leaving the nest" for the first time, I would greatly appreciate it. I just had a mental breakdown today and feel like I really need to start making some decisions, and get off the fence.

Thanks so much,
Megan

Well I am new to the Kansas City area so I am still learning myself. I have certainly seen many, many job opportunities posted for RNs, so you would definitely be able to find work.

This thread details some great areas in the city to live in:
https://www.city-data.com/forum/kansa...e-live-kc.html
If you don't want to live in the city itself, or if it's out of your price range, North Kansas City is its own entity, is an easy commute to the city, and has a nice little downtown and a view of the city, too. But you would probably have more fun in the city itself.

My husband and I are having no trouble finding things to do here. I'm 28, he's 35...there are great restaurants, shopping, parks, clubs (for dancing and for listening)...and I personally think the KC skyline looks beautiful lit up at night.

I think the worst section of town, from what I am hearing and seeing, is the southern/southeastern sections.

Here is a website with all the hospitals in Missouri:
Missouri Hospital Recruiters Hospital Web Sites

Look for hospitals in Kansas City, North Kansas City, and perhaps Lee's Summit and Independence. These three suburbs are both very close to KC. Lee's Summit is a really nice 'burb; Independence is okay, not great and not terrible, and as I stated above, North Kansas City is nice. My impression is that Truman Medical Center is the largest hospital system in the area, with several campuses. Unfortunately, I am not yet familiar enough with the area to be able to tell you which hospitals are in the nicer neighborhoods.

Why not submit a resume (or apply online) to all the area hospitals, and see what happens? I have no doubt you will get many responses, being that nurses are in such demand. Plan on coming for a weeklong visit, and schedule your interviews for that particular week. You'll see quickly enough which hospitals are in the more desireable neighborhoods as you go on your interviews.

The people here are amazingly friendly. Everyone from neighbors to our auto insurance agent has been trying to help my husband and I secure employment and find our way.

Other than contacting the hospitals directly, careerbuilder.com and kcphilnet.org have been the best two sources we have found for employment.

Best of luck to you.
