My wife and I are moving from DC to KC soon. We have a one year old daughter and would like to live in a walkable area (similar to where we currently live in Dupont Circle). I think Brookside is probably the closest match. However, what school options are available besides KC public schools? And, for those that mention the French immersion school, what happens if you do not make it in - are you simply out of luck? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A coworker has her kid at Border Star Montessori which is right there in Brookside and they're really happy with the experience she's having. Getting in is no cakewalk though. I don't know all the details, but it's a public school (they call them "Signature Schools") and my coworker had to wait in line way early in the a.m., get in a lottery and jump through a bunch of hoops. They don't make it easy on folks.

The whole waiting in line at the school instead of having a set deadline to mail in an application seems asinine and punishes working parents, but if you can make it work, it appears to be a good option for your kids.

I have two nephews (ages 5 and 8) that live in Brookside and go to Visitation. It's a Catholic school and the kids and parents are kept very involved in school productions/plays/fund-raisiers, etc. They seem to really enjoy it.

Be aware that for border star they must start during pre-k. I looked into it when I had one entering kindergarten and they told me it was too late.

I'll second the catholic or private schools as an option, I have experience with St. Peters and they've been a really good school so far. As a private school it does come with a cost if you're not a parishioner but they do a good job.

My family is moving to KC in two weeks and we're sending our daughters to St. Elizabeth on 75th. The tuition is reasonable, the educational standards are high, and we have it on good authority that it's the "Catholic school for non-Catholics."

Another option is Community School #1 across state line. I talked to them extensively when I moved. I wound up buying further south, but would've used that school had we wound up in Brookside.

St Peter's has been a great fit and a wonderful community for our non-catholic kid and family.
