Hi there! I was on this incredibly helpful forum in the winter & spring... then it looked like my plans were falling through... and now I'm back. I'm hoping to be in KC soon!

Just wanted to thank xenokc for that cool annotated MAX map.

To the original poster: these people give GREAT advice! Thanks to their help, I felt like I already knew KC well by the time I visited in February. And I fell in love with the Volker area. It has a great vibe! I must say that KC generally impressed me greatly!

Congrats on making the move! How soon by the way? I know of a rental in Volker that I can PM you.

It looks like I'm coming out next week, if all falls into place. I'll be staying at a friend's furnished duplex for probably the first month. There's a chance I may be able to rent her place long-term. I have to figure out if I'm moving all of my furniture with me, or if I can find friends to take some of it and not haul it all in the next couple of weeks.

Please PM me the info, as there is a chance that I may need to rent elsewhere starting in the end of September. Things are still a little up in the air!

I'm really looking forward to coming to Kansas City!

Hello! This is a very belated follow-up. I wound up finding a place that I loved on the Plaza, Victory Court apartments. It's a great place (affordable, hardwood floors in and old style building with some great character), but unfortunately by the time I moved out we were informed that the apartments were being sold and likely demolished to build a hotel there Such a shame that some great historic buildings are being torn down. The apartment had the character I was hoping with, with the convenience of being close to UMKC. Despite the shootings on the plaza that year, I felt very safe living there and loved the convenience of being able to walk to coffee shops and H&M when it opened and the nearby parks (during the daytime).

I only spent a year in Kansas City and now I'm back in Texas. I loved my time there and often miss the city - the unique neighborhoods, the beautiful parks, the lack of traffic, the affordability, and the friends I made. I think there are other neighborhoods I would have loved living in, including around 39th street. I'm glad that this post was helpful for others learning about the city as well! Thank you all for your help and suggestions

quirky_alex, FWIW, the Hyatt boutique hotel deal that would have affected Victory Court fell through. Hyatt was not able to obtain the tax-increment financing they wanted to build at the Victory Court site (funnily enough, City Hall didn't agree that a location a half a block off 47th Street, heart of the Plaza constituted "blight"), so the buildings did not, in fact, get sold, and are no longer on the chopping block at this time. I imagine that it's only a matter of time before another developer tries to get that land, though...it's prime real estate, and the buildings are old and haven't gone condo. They're great, though.
