My family and I will be relocating from Bainbridge Island, WA to KCMO in August, and renting initially. We'd rather use a property management company to rent a home, since that usually means problems will be taken care of by a professional instead of being a DIY job or "repaired" by somebody's cousin. But I'm having a tough time finding property mgmt. companies that have places where we'd like to be, in and around Brookside. Anybody have any suggestions?

You might try Boveri Realty Group. Looks like they have some houses for rent in the Plaza/Brookside area. They seem to specialize in the urban core of KCMO.

Brookside is in such demand you may have a tough time finding something.. at least what you want.
Some alternate areas to check (at least to rent for a while) are other hoods around the Plaza... S Plaza/Loose Park, Southmoreland (closer to Nelson Museum, E of Plaza), Westwood (w side of Plaza), Roanoke (w side of Midtown with grander homes than Brookside for the price). Brookside shops/restaurants are more refined, Roanoke/w39th leans ethnic eats with altie shops. Possibly Central Hyde Park (E midtown) - awesome homes but its closer to inner city commotion. C HP might be OK to rent for a year while finding what you want.
Also, here is a city guide to give some perspective...
