There was a drug store on that corner. They had a soda fountain and one might have been able to get a burger there, I am not sure.

Maid-Rite is still around, mostly in its Iowa roots. Three locations in MO, Rolla, Lexington & Hannibal

The 1960 directory lists 60 businesses under a particular heading. The 2015 directory lists only 20 under the same heading. What category of business is this?

The taxi business went out and the little place became Tandy Leather but I think it was later than '54.

The 1954 directory has the following taxi companies:
Independence Cab 223 W Maple
Jack's Cab- 303 W Lexington
Southard- 305 N Main
Waterfield- 1400 W Lexington

In 1956 all of those remain, with the following additions:
Englewood Cab- 1726 Harris
Fairmount- 10121 Hwy 24
Maywood- 10310 Truman Road
Service Cab- 605 1/2 S Ash

AHA! Recalibrate your memory bank. What you seek is found in 1952:
A & B Cab Company- 119 W Kansas, phone Independence 6623 and 9937

There are two possibilities. One is just NE of the current home of the C&A Depot. The other is NE of Spring & Farmer, the source of Mill Creek. Both have been covered over.
