I have to admit I am woefully ignorant about the Hasidic faith and the family life told in this new book. I am only sharing this article because i bet I'm not the only one with so little information. Could you live like this?

That kind of stuff gives me nightmares....
I would kill myself if I was forced to live like that.
I would try to escape once and if I was brought back or held captive, I would end it pretty quickly, I wouldn't go through more than 72 hours of living like that.

Hmmm...so I lived in Brooklyn for 5yrs and while the Hasids I encountered were definitely what I would consider sexist, there are many different sects of Hasidism so I would be careful to generalize an entire religious group by one article. For example, from what I understand from my orthodox friends (which is different than Hasids despite what the ABC article implies) they definitely use matchmakers but there is generally a courting period and consent from both people before a marriage.

Thank you!!

That was NOT a well-researched, unbiased news article on life in that community.

I hate "journalism" that is nothing more then titilation and book-selling. I thought I was reading the National Enquirer.

There is a great PBS documentary on Hasidism that is worth watching:

A Life Apart: Hasidism in America -- A Brief Introduction to Hasidism

It also doesn't mean that it's representative of the entire group. It's one person's experiences. I've read a lot about Hasidic people because I'm a religion nerd. Most of them are not as extreme as she portrays. Yes, there is sexism. Yes, boys and girls are expected to cover their bodies. Oh, the horror of having to wear long sleeves. When married, the women do wear wigs but, they don't necessarily have to shave their heads. They are just supposed to make sure their hair doesn't show. They do also have the matchmaker and have a period of courtship often.

Please, stop basing what you think of an entire group of people off of what one person says.

I once took a diamond grading course in NYC. I was the only female in a class of Hasidic men. They wouldn't look at me, much less talk to me. I was very uncomfortable, but I bet they were too.

Also if you are walking down the side walk next to a man and a hasidic man is walking toward you he will only go around you on the man's side.
