I've been on a couple of interviews during the last year where they were asking me to fill out some paperwork during the interview, which concerns me. It's usually regarding my understanding of the job and to initial here and/or agreeing to a background check. These need only to be done if an offer is made and I accept but why are they asking me to fill this out during the interview when no offer has been made if one is even going to be made? By the way, I didn't get an offer from any of those jobs.

I have my suspicions on why they are asking me to sign a background check/understanding of the job but I wanted to get everyone's take on this and if it has happen to them. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

We do it all of the time because it saves us time. It is a lot easier and faster to have you sign the paperwork while you are in the building than to try and get you back at a later date to sign. If you don't move on in the process, the paperwork is filed until it is shredded. What is your suspicion?

We do it for the same reasons as Joe.

We don't ask for permission to do background checks during the initial application, as most people rightfully find that to be intrusive. Once you are on site for an interview, you are one of about 5 finalists, so there is a very real chance that we will need to verify your details and do the criminal check.

If we wait until we have decided on a final candidate, we then have to contact them and ask for permission to run these checks. That can add several days to the hiring process, as HR insists on a wet ink signature for these permission documents. I am not sure that we really need wet ink, but it is our process. If the candidate is out of area, that is inconvenient for them and us. If they are in area, they might have difficulty coming in to sign.

You seem to be suspicious of this process, but the intent is really to make life easier for the candidate and expedite the hiring process.

Why do you think companies do it this way?
