Have you seen what the relo package looks like? It may cover lease termination and finding an apartment.

no idea about the relocation package. i know the pay was listed as $165K. after my third interview the recruiter told me I was the last candidate and that they'd like me to start as soon as possible. when I gave them my exaggerated salary requirement I was surprised they didn't shoot it down. conversations continued and now it's just a matter of meeting with senior management and getting the details of the offer together. if they can't cover the entire relo i'd offer to commute from DC to NYC on the Amtrak red eye if they're willing to go to $190K.

I'm 100% certain, my current job will not match the $170-190K opportunity. Also, the likelihood of getting a similar promotion are pretty slim at my current job.

Any opinions on if I should jump ship or not???
Make sure you do a COLA comparison. Also a net tax comparison. NYC tax rates are astronomical.

sounds like you're all set to make the jump. but don't do the commute from DC to NYC, you'll burn out in a few months.

I'd say go for it, especially since you don't have children, you can always move back to DC once you have kids. I would move to NY in a heartbeat if I did not have my daughter, wish I made that decision years ago right after school. Good luck

Just a couple of things to consider…you said you would be managing a team of engineers. Are you an engineer yourself? If not, you may want to pay close attention during your in-person visit to whether there will be tension because of that fact. I’m not at all suggesting you aren’t qualified for the job.

2. You said the position was managing a team. If so far in your career you have been living and dying by your own sword, you will find a vastly different world waiting for you when your success no longer depends on what you do, but on what others do. Maybe I completely misunderstand the job, but I would be surprised if it as casual as mentoring engineers and assisting the sales team. There is a certain freedom in being responsible only for your work performance. However, it is also difficult to advance unless you move to management.

3. Just because they didn’t balk at what you suggested for salary doesn’t mean they are going to offer what you want either. Maybe they are hoping after a number of interviews and a personal visit you will be so invested you will take their offer of 165k.
