Advertisements

I am trying to find some local part time work and it seems to be quite elusive. This is in an area that is 50 to 60 miles from the nearest "craigslist" city and it is pointless to advertise/look there for jobs here.

There are three nearby towns, all have a local newspaper but very few (if any) job ads in them.

Any ideas on how to dig up opportunities? I have a wide range of skills in accounting, manufacturing (quality & machine set up, troubleshooting) and other skills. I am needing part time work just so I can feed my dogs while I work on my business. It is going to be very slow starting up and I need additional revenue over the next year or so.

Any ideas where to find hidden part time opportunities?

PTP! Pound The Pavement!

Many jobs aren't listed in smaller communities and many small business also need some accounting help. I'd put up some signs on community notice boards advertising yourself and, at the same time, stop into small businesses to see if they need any help. I live in a pretty small community where many people such as yourself manage to get by quite nicely with a few customers and as long as you're presentable, your work is good, you keep deadlines and your prices are reasonable you'd be surprised at how quickly word spreads.

It may be considered "the old fashioned way" but it works. Good luck!

Craigslist is not useless. It helped me find two jobs in Michigan when I needed the work. If you stick to it every day and send out plenty of resumes, your bound to hear something. People don't post jobs on there because they're bored ya know

I'd suggest you do two things. Tell everyone you encounter that you're looking for a p/t job, and as another person suggested, pound the pavement.

Hi KooKee,
Since I posted the O.P. I have just decided to pursue the business full time and forget about getting a job. I never did attract any serious job opportunities from Craigslist.

I have been attempting to advertise my business services on Craigslist but it seems as if all it attracts (at least in the Nashville market) is bottom feeders. I have yet to receive a call from anyone serious as a result of Craigslist. I am still advertising in hopes I may attract the right clients BUT I have learned to discuss my pricing in the first five minutes of a phone call.

Another issue I have is I am between Nashville and Chattanooga. I would really like to start running ads in Chattanooga but Craigslist is really restrictive about advertising. You have to have a LAND LINE in order to post and there can only be one account associated with that land line phone. They do not accept cell phone numbers or Vonnage numbers to use with an account. I can post two very similar ads in the Nashville services area using one account but if I try to post in Nashville & Chattanooga it gets "ghosted".

Go to a church (or whatever social function) and hang out for a bit. After you're not a stranger anymore...start casually mentioning to people you're looking for a job. You'd be surprised how many peoples' best friends sister in law's family dog walker just so happens to looking for someone to help him run a side business, or whatever.

Charm the old people. They have many connections and a lot of free time. If you can get into their good books, you're solid. Seriously, this works a lot...even in cities with CL.
