My first job was in retail, and I did this at 3 different stores over the course of 3 years while I was 18-20. It gave me enough work experience to learn how "people are". I'm 23 now and I haven't worked a "real" job since and I probably won't until whatever co-op/internship/whatever I end up involved in as I graduate UC Davis in approximately 2 years.
The point being, by the time I graduate, there will be a big employment gap (4+ years) through most of my college career.
However, I do have a small internet business that I've been running out of my bedroom since I quit my last retail job. It's matched (slightly surpassed) the pay I was receiving working at an independent grocery store as a checker. I've always kept it legitimate and licensed and I report/pay my taxes so my (small) income is on the books.
I'm not some young uptown entrepreneur and I don't come from a well-off family, I'm just a college student who's found a way to support himself through the mess we're in and I've learned a ton from it.
My major is Civil Engineering and I'm very curious how prospective employers will look at this when the time comes to start a real career.
I have gaps in my employment history and had worked part time retail to help out with the household finances. I am much older than you and I am worried about this myself. I was a SAHM and student. My college helped me with my resume and basically you boost your skills on what you did during college. Your internet business is something positive. Also if you belong to any groups with your school that helps as well. I just graduated in December so I am seriously looking for a job now. The school loans will be coming due soon. You have your age going for you, it will work out.

Are you asking if you should put your "Internet business" on
your resume? I say "yes" - it shows you have some business
acumen and responsibility to task.
You're self-employed and you're a college student. Most employers wouldn't view that as a "gap".
