We will be traveling down to Jacksonville in about a week to check out these specific areas and I wanted to get some opinions of each.

Callahan
Ponte Vedra
St. Johns county/Bartram Trail High School area

We plan to visit the schools in each area, but besides that can anyone tell me the best places to go to really get a feel for each place? Are there good and bad areas and if so, which sides of town are the best to live? What kind of enviorment can we expect from each area. I have heard that Ponte Vedra is a pretty expensive place, so I kind of have an idea about that but not so much about Callahan and St. Johns. Any opinions and advice is very much appreciated. Thanks!

Not exactly certain where you mean by "St Johns" ... the county? the areas of Mandarin and Fruit Cove?

Callahan and Ponte Vedra are very different from each other. A quick drive around either place on the main roads and through neighborhoods (which you could use any map to do) would show you the vast differences.

Yeah, I am a little confused about St. Johns. I was looking at the website for Bartram Trail High School and it has an address in St. Johns, FL however I am not sure that there is really a St. Johns, FL. Does anyone know the actual town this school is located in? This is the school district that we are interested in.

Yeah, comparing Callahan and PV is like comparing apples and oranges. St. Johns, FL is a new name for what used to be Fruit Cove. That's located in NW St. Johns County and is primarily the location for Julington Creek Plantation.

Wow! Tall order! lol :-)

To describe each in simply one word (which I'm not known for but I'll try :-)
Callahan - rural
Ponte Vedra - beach
Julington Creek - master-planned

Each has pros and cons.

Kmarie29...my address is Saint Johns FL, but we are not in Julington Creek. I think the area is lovely but does not have easy access to interstate 95 (they are working on this). You also have to go to Mandarin for any shopping other than groceries. The public schools are great (according to my neighbors), my kids go to the Catholic school and we love it. We moved from the northeast, as did many of my neighbors so we have met some wonderful people in a fairly short period of time.

How far would we have to drive to Mandarin for groceries and such?

There are a few grocery stores (2 Publix, 1 Food Lion) in the Julington Creek / St Johns area. To get to Mandarin for shopping at a Super Walmart or Target, it's only a 7-8 minute drive. Not bad.

In addition to going to schools, etc., another idea is to go to the grocery store. I am in stores all over and each have different kinds of shoppers. I haven't been to Callahan stores, but my nonscientific research shows the demographics of McClenny (also rural), PVB and St. Johns as being very different from one another.

Trivia- most polite children- Dunn Av. Winn Dixie.
