PICKTHAL: When the heaven is cleft asunder,
SHAKIR: When the heaven becomes cleft asunder,

082.002
YUSUFALI: When the Stars are scattered;
PICKTHAL: When the planets are dispersed,
SHAKIR: And when the stars become dispersed,

082.003
YUSUFALI: When the Oceans are suffered to burst forth;
PICKTHAL: When the seas are poured forth,
SHAKIR: And when the seas are made to flow forth,

082.004
YUSUFALI: And when the Graves are turned upside down;-
PICKTHAL: And the sepulchres are overturned,
SHAKIR: And when the graves are laid open,

082.005
YUSUFALI: (Then) shall each soul know what it hath sent forward and (what it hath) kept back.
PICKTHAL: A soul will know what it hath sent before (it) and what left behind.
SHAKIR: Every soul shall know what it has sent before and held back.

082.006
YUSUFALI: O man! What has seduced thee from thy Lord Most Beneficent?-
PICKTHAL: O man! What hath made thee careless concerning thy Lord, the Bountiful,
SHAKIR: O man ! what has beguiled you from your Lord, the Gracious one,

082.007
YUSUFALI: Him Who created thee. Fashioned thee in due proportion, and gave thee a just bias;
PICKTHAL: Who created thee, then fashioned, then proportioned thee?
SHAKIR: Who created you, then made you complete, then made you symmetrical?

082.008
YUSUFALI: In whatever Form He wills, does He put thee together.
PICKTHAL: Into whatsoever form He will, He casteth thee.
SHAKIR: Into whatever form He pleased He constituted you.

082.009
YUSUFALI: Nay! But ye do reject Right and Judgment!
PICKTHAL: Nay, but ye deny the Judgment.
SHAKIR: Nay! but you give the lie to the judgment day,

PICKTHAL: Lo! there are above you guardians,
SHAKIR: And most surely there are keepers over you

YUSUFALI: Kind and honourable,- Writing down (your deeds):
PICKTHAL: Generous and recording,
SHAKIR: Honorable recorders,

082.012
YUSUFALI: They know (and understand) all that ye do.
PICKTHAL: Who know (all) that ye do.
SHAKIR: They know what you do.

082.013
YUSUFALI: As for the Righteous, they will be in bliss;
PICKTHAL: Lo! the righteous verily will be in delight.
SHAKIR: Most surely the righteous are in bliss,

082.014
YUSUFALI: And the Wicked – they will be in the Fire,
PICKTHAL: And lo! the wicked verily will be in hell;
SHAKIR: And most surely the wicked are in burning fire,

082.015
YUSUFALI: Which they will enter on the Day of Judgment,
PICKTHAL: They will burn therein on the Day of Judgment,
SHAKIR: They shall enter it on the day of judgment.

082.016
YUSUFALI: And they will not be able to keep away therefrom.
PICKTHAL: And will not be absent thence.
SHAKIR: And they shall by no means be absent from it.

082.017
YUSUFALI: And what will explain to thee what the Day of Judgment is?
PICKTHAL: Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Day of Judgment is!
SHAKIR: And what will make you realize what the day of judgement is?

082.018
YUSUFALI: Again, what will explain to thee what the Day of Judgment is?
PICKTHAL: Again, what will convey unto thee what the Day of Judgment is!

Hi Woodrow, it seems that you are not getting many fellow Muslims contributing to your topic.

Of course, this could be because there are not many Muslims in this forum with good enough English skills to engage in a real discussion.

On the other hand, it could be that Muslims (like fundamentalist Christians) don't like to discuss things because they would have to consider ideas that do not agree with their own. They may be good at spouting off their beliefs, but not listening to others. What do you think?

We are only on Juz 30 I don't see it as being a thread that is conducive to discussion, yet.

So far it is rather easy presentation for a very basic study of the Qur'an as to what it contains and an introduction to the vocabulary used. Juz 30 only contains short surat that are not very controversial and fairly easy to understand Most of us accept them as being literal and there is little differences in any tafsir by any scholars. Juz 30 is fairly easy to memorize and contains about 80% of the vocabulary used in the Qur'an.

I suspect that by the time we reach Juz 15 we will have plenty of discussion. the most controversial surat are 9, 5 and 2. Partially because they are long, plus often individual ayyat in them are quoted out of context and the surat are specific to a particular time and specific events.

Returning to Surah 82

Iafsir of ibn Kathir HERE

a modern commentary: HERE

Again I remind you all Tafsir and commentary is the opinion of a person. Use them as guides but not
the final word. Verify the truth of all men by your own searching.
