From my understanding what Motif allows you to do is buy other peoples' "Motifs" or create your own "Motifs." Motifs are bundles of individual stocks (mini-portfolios) that are based on an idea such as "Chinese Solar." Instead of paying commission to buy 5 stocks, you pay one once ($9.95) to buy your Motif. If you want to make changes to an individual stock in your Motif, the commission rate is $4.95, which is reasonable.
They are trying to make it a social exchange for members. What I find interesting about the company is that they are trying to get approval from the government, so members can be paid whenever another member chooses to invest in their Motif. They also said, they would like to get to the point to reward top performers by allowing them to promote their Motif(s) and get paid whenever someone chooses them. In addition, they are working on allowing members to copy the moves of their favorite member(s). Let's say your favorite member is Jack123 and you want to buy when he buys, or sell when he sells, essentially you could choose to copy his movements and it would all be done automatically for you.
This isn't for me, but it does sound interesting if all their plans actually happen.
