littlelou, I'm currently using
Clearwire, a wireless internet service available in some areas. Maybe you can do a lookup for your friends or they can call Clearwire to ask about service.
Some ISP's offer Internet by way of a DLEC, Data Local Exchange Carrier. That is a data company such as Covad will lease the telephone copper pair from the phone company and then the ISP will provide Internet over that service. I did this in Dallas with Speakeasy, an Internet provider out of Seattle. One bill only, to
Speakeasy. Excellent customer service and tech support. Does not require dealing with the phone company, the DLEC does that.
And of course there's cable.
