I have never used a wireless dongle thingie for my laptop while I'm out. If I need to access the internet, I'll just use my phone.

Now there may be times in the coming months where I will need to work from home (which is not a problem since I have home internet) or need to work while out and i would need to use my laptop but I don't want to be limited with using the free wifi access from my cable company. plus it's not that secure.

I don't want to sign up where I'm paying monthly for a wireless internet plan that I may use 2-3 times a month. I did a quick search and it seems like there are plenty of companies in the UK that offer pay as you go service but not many in America, just from the quick search.

Has anyone had any experience with any company that offers such a thing? Can you give some suggestions? Thank you.

I am certain that if your cable company offers Wifi it is not free. I assume that you have an account with your cable company and that you pay a monthly fee for service from them?

Why not meet with them and discuss your concerns about how secure it is? They may be able to help you.

Submariner: Many cable companies (I know Time Warner is one) offer free wifi hot spots around town that TWC customers can use for free. Never really understood why they do that, but some do.

Str1der: TMK there aren't ANY services like that in the States.
Who is your phone carrier? And how much data do you get?

Okay.

If you pay Time Warner a monthly fee to be one of their customers, then they provide 'free' Wifi.

I do not have a cable company in my town, so I am not sure how they work this.

I am fairly certain that if you are a paying customer, using one of their products, ie 'free Wifi - that you pay for', then you should be able to talk to their customer service folks and get clarification about their product/service.
