Lets not get wrapped around the axle because Google released this report. It's a large read but you'll come away eyes open...

We see the results of this technology almost daily here with OP's posting about slowness, hijackings etc...

Today, web injection manifests in many forms, but fundamentally occurs when malicious and unwanted actors tamper directly with browser sessions for their own profit.

Did you read the article before replying?

For example that tweaked hosts file you mention? I am aware of it and know for a fact they don't/can't keep up with the 10 new ad injection extensions authored per day (yup it's in the article)... I guess the hosts file would work if/when you want to block entire domains but that would be like cutting your nose off to spite your face...

It is so easy for those of us who understand what tools like Ad-blocker and No Script do and what to expect when a web page doesn't load correctly with them installed *but* for the average Internet user they'll install those programs and when they find major problems with displaying or entering data on their favorite websites I'll wager those programs get uninstalled...

What compromises arise when sites use HSTS?

Yep, read the article. I'm well aware that a tweaked hosts file is only PART of a solution. And yeah, I agree with you that a lot of users just uninstall or disable those add-ons when the video of Miss Piggy in a garter belt spanking Kermit doesn't load like their porn site says it should.
