I want to be "unlisted," so to speak, to the general public on the Internet. Are these the steps to take? Search on your name and for every site that shows up, go into each site and manually edit the info and select the "hide info" option.
I know how to get unlisted from the City-Data records and have already done so.
I don't want to block or hinder potential employers from doing background checks! I just don't like plugging in my name and having my home address, known relatives, etc., info pop up.
Are there additional steps that a person needs to take? You know, back in the day (before some of you were born - HA!), you could tell your phone company that you wanted an "unlisted and unpublished" telephone number, and you would not be listed in their phone books. Now, with the advent of the Internet, it's not a one-step process any longer.
Change your name to something common. I enjoy a wonderful level of anonymity due to sharing a name with several people with a level of celebrity, as well as about a bajillion "regular" people.
