For some reason I cannot think of how I can place icons on my Windows XP desktop that will take me to Internet websites!
What I am doing is trying to set up a simple desktop menu for my wife to use to watch whatever television programs she wants to see...then I will ditch the satellite subscription.

That is what the favorites or bookmarks bar is for. Still, I can drag and drop bookmarks from my bar onto my desktop and they work just like you want it. I use Chrome, by the way.
Internet Explorer: On the page/tab you want to save to your Desktop, simply RIGHT-click on an empty part of the page where there are no links, etc. so in the menu you will see "Create Shortcut" when you selected it, it will pop a confirmation asking you if you want to save the shortcut to that page on your Desktop. Just click on YES.
Firefox/Waterfox: RIGHT-click on the page, you will see "Save Page As.." option. When you select it, the Save as... window will appear, select Desktop as the target location and you are done.

This actually creates a copy of the page as an HTML file on the desktop, not a shortcut.
In Windows the easiest way to create a shortcut is ...
Right click on the desktop,
select new
select shortcut
In the "Location" box: enter the URL to the web site.
Hit next
Give it a name
Hit finish.

Yeah, you are right. The way I saved it was just a snap-shot of the page with no way to refresh and see the actual page in real life. Wonder why FF/WF doesn't provide an easier way?
For IE the steps I mentioned is the easiest but for Firefox/Waterfox, there is no other way then the standard way you mentioned:
1. Highlight the link (URL) in the browser address bar
2. Right-click on the desktop
3. New > Shortcut
4. Paste the link > Next
5. Pick a name for the shortcut
6. Finish
I am on Windows 7, but if I remember correctly, XP also allows this:
Simply click on the favicon (the little website icon to the left of the URL in the address bar) and drag & drop it onto your desktop (of course you have to reduce the size of your browser window before so that you see a bit of your background).
Sweeeeeeeeeeet ! ! ! It never occurred to me that I would want website icons on my desktop but this thread has sparked a usefulness in my gray matter. My bookmarks list is longer and harder to look through than I care to appreciate - even being sorted in folders and tagged.
So, for a particular group of websites I can create a Desktop folder and save to that location. Will be easier than running through a page full of folders, then to search through the bookmarks in that folder. Just to have the bookmarks list collapse before I can click on the link...
Thanx.........
