I have a few free wordpress blogs, which are fine. However, I feel their traffic management is a little too basic. Does Blogger allow access to Google Analytics? Apparently wordpress doesn't allow google analytics.

I'm really tempted to switch to Blogger for that alone. On the other hand, the privacy of Blogger is a little daunting, it seems it links you directly with your other google stuff like Google + and Gmail, even though you may not necessarily want that public and obvious link.

So how would you assess Wordpress vs Blogger in terms of 1. Privacy and 2. Analytics?

Why not spend $5 a month and get your own domain. Install Wordpress on it and you don't have to deal with the any limitations set by Wordpress's site.

The free sites on wordpress.com don't allow installation of extras like Google Analytics. You can get hosting for a few dollars a month: google "best website hosting" or "top 10 website hosts". All good hosting companies will offer easy installation of WordPress via a few mouse clicks.

There are thousands of plugins and themes for customizing WordPress. There are themes that have hooks for Google Analytics and integration with social media sites like Google+, and plugins that will connect with Google Analytics and social media, too. Unlike Blogger, you can do pretty much anything you want with WordPress. If you see yourself wanting to do anything beyond basic blogging with your site down the road, WordPress is a much better choice.

Security should be a concern, too. If you go with WordPress, be sure to keep everything up to date, don't go hog-wild with the plugins unless you know what you're doing (some will be incompatible with each other), and install a decent security plugin. I use and recommend Better WP Security as an easy-to-use solution:

I would suggest avoiding this, A) the script in the panel may be out of date and B)those installtions are sometimes altered from the source so getting support from the vendor can be problematic.

Other than you need to keep things like wordpress up to date, installing manually is usually a very easy process. If you can't install it manually you probably shouldn't be running it to begin with.

I'm a WordPress developer ... I've yet to see a hosting company that alters WordPress core in a Softaculous or Fantastico or SimpleScripts install. Core is core. Frankly, I don't know why a reputable hosting company would do so ... the only scenarios I can imagine are shady ones. Regarding out of date versions, WordPress will tell you after the install whether it needs to be updated or not. I often use one of these scripts to do an initial install, then clean up after (but I certainly don't recommend anyone use them for updates past the initial install).

I was part of phpBB team for a while, they didn't let me play with the code though.

I don't know what the practices are for the control panel nowadays but it used to be an issue. phpBB wouldn't even give support for those install up until a few years ago because of it.
