Huh---first response--because they are part of the state and have to take the good with the bad.

Actually, from all I read in the local paper regularly and people I know from all walks of life, the opposite is true in Monroe County. There are several highly placed Democratic officials I know that are for the road so it's not a Dem/Rep thing. I also think there was an opinion poll done a few years ago that indicated the same thing. There is a very vocal minority, but most people either have no opinion or are anxiously awaiting it's completion. What is often shown on Indianapolis news stations is the opposition--it makes good news. (on a side note--I'm a bit surprised I didn't see a story about the latest court actions on the news this week) Some of that perception comes from the fact that several elected Bloomington officials are very vocal about their disapproval and have acted to block it, even when such actions are detrimental to the bigger transportation picture in Bloomington and Monroe County.

I certainly sympathize with people losing houses, etc. All I can say is that they won't be the first, or the last to do so. Sometimes one has to sacrifice for the greater good. The road actually cuts through one of my favorite drives. I'll miss it, and it's shocking to see the trees cut down, etc. I personally think it needs to be completed for economic and safety reasons. Last year I drove from Monroe County to the southside of Indy daily for about 6 months. It can be dangerous as cars try to make it across 37 from all the little cross roads and stopping at all of those lights adds significant time to the trip. It makes absolutely no sense that one of the economic engines (IU) of the state and one of it's major universities lacks a good, safe means of travel to the capital city. Think about the trip from W. Lafayette to Indy.

I am starting to agree with this more with every day that goes by. The "super majority" that the Republicans have might be the worst thing to ever happen to Indiana.
