I'm from Indy but live in Chicago, and before Chicago I never had an Italian Beef or other Chicago fast food. After I went to Portillos I couldn't believe they didn't have this food in Indy/Indiana. I was wondering why not? Would people just not go to a place like that? Does Porrtillos not allow franchising?

Indy likes national franchises like Jack in the Box. They just opened up one in Greenwood and the drive thru is always packed 24-7. Portillos is way too delicious and plus they don't sell the pork tenderloin sandwich which I believe is what Indy is known for. I would love for a Portillos to open up here. Italian beefs, sausages, delicious burgers and dogs. Hell, Portillos puts Jack in the Box to shame.

You can start at Fat Dan's and then travel down to South of Chicago in Fletcher Place. I've had Italian Beef in Chicago and here; it doesn't do anything for me. I do like the hot dogs at Fat Dan's.

Portillo's is decent, but c'mon, it's not THAT big of a deal. You can get Chicago-style dogs at King David's. I think some people just get in their heads that if it's from Chicago it must be SOOOO much better than anything offered anywhere else in the Midwest. Kind of like In-n-Out burger out west...BFD.

JITB is packed in Greenwood because it's still a novelty in the Indy market. It'll wear off. There are plenty of places to get decent burgers in Indy. As for Italian beef, I'm with Toxic. I like it well enough, but I'm not that wowed by it. I'd just as soon have a good Philly cheesesteak, for which there is plenty of availability here.

And for the record, I don't eat pork tenderloin sandwiches.

Sorry about the tenderloin remark. I just can't figure out what is the signature Indianapolis food. Corn dogs? Tenderloins? Pulled pork? Come on man help me out.

I had king david's in Indy's airport. I'll never do that again.

Tenderloin is probably the closest thing Indiana has to a signature food. That doesn't mean everyone has to like it.

I often have lunch at John's Famous Stew. That place rocks!! Great food for sure.

It always CRACKS me up when I'm pulling out of that joint and I see the "Free Wrestling Friday Nights" sign on that dump across the street!!! Has anyone else seen the sign I'm talking about? I really want to go there one Friday night for the "free wrestling" just to see what it's all about. I bet it's quite a scene!!

Fried chicken Hoosier-style: in an iron skillet with lard.

Sugar Cream pie used to be Indiana's signature dessert, now I've seen it in other states but often it is just a custard pie they call sugar cream.
