Hidden Valley Lake area (houses, school districts, gated community)

Can anyone fill me in on how "private" the Hidden Valley Lake area (in Dearborn County) is? Is it a big gated community? Any nice public access parks/lake access in the area? Is it as beautiful as it's cracked up to be?

It was gated for decades, but it's not any more. You can drive through from one end to the other, but it's not practical and very hilly and out of the way.
The original A-frames by the lake from the early 70s are neat looking. There are some larger regular homes and also some smaller streets with smaller contemporary homes. The houses are very sporadic. It's not at all built up like it was originally planned as.
I don't live there, but I know a lot of people who do and I drive past the entrance on my way to work every day.
The one thing that was annoying to people living there, but which doesn't exist any more, was the whole fast time/slow time summer clock system. HVL is split between two school districts, one which was on ft, the other on st. That was discontinued when Indiana went to all Eastern time. (If you don't know what I'm talking about consider yourself lucky!)
