For this coming fall I might have to choose between a teaching job at USI in Evansville and one at Purdue U.-Calumet in Hammond. Can anyone give me any pros/cons/indifferents about these cities or these universities? (Besides Hammond's advantages of being so much closer to Chicago and Lake Michigan, that is).

Thanks in advance

I am a fairly recent USI alum, so, this is a just a small bit on the campus and city. The campus is isolated from the city and is on the small side. The campus is growing. The new library is fantastic. USI's enrollment is growing, and while it is still a commuter campus, that is slowly starting to change.

The west side of Evansville is...........the west side of Evansville. It is what it is. There primary retail is along the Lloyd. There is a theater, Super Wal Mart, a kohls, fast food, and not much else; though it is getting better. Evansville is in effect the east side. The east side - west side divide is the big divide in Evansville.

The riverfront in Evansville is pretty, downtown Evansville in general is pretty though it is lacking in amenities. That is certainly improving right now, with the new condos going up along Main Street and the new arena. Evansville is the hub of a somewhat isolated region. There is almost no reason to visit places like Henderson, KY from Evansville.

Well, Purdue-Cal is in the Chicago metropolitan area ... it's not so isolated. You have a lot of choices in terms of where you can live .. not sure of the cost of living differential. But you wanting advatages other than the fact that Hammond is by Chicago and the lakeshore ... well ... there aren't many. Well, the fact that you have 1 slamalama huge airport, a big airport and a regional airport (South Bend) all within a couple hours ... PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS ... hmmmmm .... any kind of food you can imagine ... hmmmm ...

The weather is different. It's much colder and snowier in the Hammond area. Milder winters in Evansville. Summer's are the opposite.
