Hi everyone!

Currently we are out of state but we have accepted a position in South Bend and will be moving there soon . We are newly married, in our 20s, and wanting to raise a family in a newer area with a younger population so our kids could have other kids to be friends with. We'd like to be rural or in a nice suburban area, nothing too city-ish. Price range, nothing too extravagant, we're just starting out We are wondering what area of South Bend (including Granger/Mishawaka) do you believe would be good for us?

** Edit **
We are looking at the 200-350 price range for housing if that helps.

Are schools a factor?
Some of the best public schools in the area include Jimtown/Baugo Schools and Penn Harrison Madison School district is good too.

Schools are indeed a factor. We are open to both public and private schools. I will look into those schools you mentioned. Thanks

Also keep in mind Indiana has one of the largest school voucher systems in the country. If your income isn't very high you can qualify for one.

If someone is looking for a house between 250-350K, and looking in north central indiana, vouchers won't be an issue at all.

Don't go Baugo ... it's a tiny school system that's just odd.

For young marrieds looking for a good place to raise kids, stick with Penn Harris Madison. The Madison part of PHM is rural, so you could have your place the country, but still be in a top notch school district.

Baugo is 3A and ironically my class has over 165 students. how is that tiny?
LaVille is tiny. If we are going to make a comparison.

PHM schools are better.

Jimtown was the same size at LaVille not terribly long ago.

If you are deciding to live in the Penn Harris Madison School district, before you buy check out the water situation.
There are areas that have been overdeveloped and the septic systems are seeping into the ground water.

Do you have any insight on which areas in there to avoid? Any particular subdivisions that are worse than others?
