How could that be?! My reaction was similar to this guy's: state of grace (1990) - YouTube (NSFW)

Stop by any local Wal Mart and check out the clientele. You'll become a believer.

To be fair, that's true almost everywhere.

There is just nothing to do there. I lived in Indiana for years and you just don't see people outside doing things. Everybody just seemed happily addicted to the tv set or xbox.

Yep. The biggest issue for me was the weather, especially in the summer. Second issue was that most of the state is nothing particularly interesting from a terrain perspective; Brown County, Turkey Run, and Indiana Dunes, the obvious exceptions. However, they simply just don't hold a candle to the incredible national treasure that is Olympic National Park/Forest. Has to be one of the most amazing and gorgeous places on the planet. Have to say, I enjoy spending a lot more time outdoors since I moved to the PNW.

I also read that Indiana has one of the highest number of fast food restaurants per capita.

Terrain and weather are lame excuses for being out of shape. I'm not a real outdoorsy person myself, so things like hiking and long-distance bike riding do nothing for me. I commit myself to a fitness program that keeps me in shape rain, sleet, snow or heat.

Obviously they make a difference though. People are simply more active here than in Indy and I don't think the fact that weather is generally decent and there is so much outdoor opportunity here have nothing to with it. I also think a better public transport system would help Indy stop being so lazy. More sidewalks and bikelanes wouldn't hurt either. Didn't the Indy come in 99 ranked out of 100 for the least active city in the US?

Personally, I do my best and most effective exercise outdoors. I hate being inside to exercise. Boring.

Only to those people looking for an easy excuse. If you are overweight in Indianapolis; a city that offers ample resources for outdoor exercise and activity, that is a YOU problem. As far as bikelanes, Indianapolis has expanded its bike infrastructure in recent years. From the Cultural Trail to the other trails and the new bike lanes, it is simply a cop-out (or lack of knowledge) to say lack of bike infrastructure is a problem in Indianapolis.
