I'm pretty excited. When this kind of stuff happens I start to think, maybe this place isn't so bad.

I was quite surprised by this announcement, because Whole Foods generally doesn't locate in such a small market as South Bend-Mishawaka. Definitely positive news for this entire area.

True. Companies like Whole Foods look at the demographics. Generally folks with higher education eat better. This area actually has a decent market in the organic foods arena. I can think of at least 3 small stores that are completely organic. I was reading some news stories in my hometown (that is out of state) which has a much larger population than this area. A strip mall is being torn down and many were offering suggestions of what should take its place. Some suggested Whole Foods and many agreed it would never happen because that area is too "meat and potatoes". I think if Whole Foods does well here, Trader Joe's will be next.

The fact that Whole Foods located here, and does well, I think will show that this area has a bigger population that what it would seem. You have the entire Michiana region, which on a given year, most people travel to the South Bend area to do some type of shopping. The Michiana region is home to over 1,000,000 people. Not too mention that Elkhart County does not have an impressive retail scene, and they frequently travel to South Bend-Mishawaka to do some type of shopping, whether it be the mall or whatnot. Elkhart County has around 200,000 people.

Plus ... Whole Foods is notoriously anti-union, so the RTW passage probably helped.
