Hi there,

Question for you guys. I was driving on I-90 today, came to a toll ($0.60), and literally only had $0.50 (!!) and $20 bills. It was one of the toll booths with no toll collector, just a basket. I threw the 50 cents in, and just drove away ... not sure what my other options were other than throwing a $20 bill into the basket.

If it matters, I was in a rental car, with Missouri plates. Any advice?

Go to the Illinois Tollway website and find the "missed a toll? pay here" link, or something to that effect. You have 7 days from the date of the missed toll to pay. And no, you won't get credit for the 50 cents you already tossed in there. The other option is to wait for the rental company to deduct the $20 fine (and probably an additional "processing fee") from your credit card once the receive the infraction notice, which could be anywhere from a month to two years from now.

This is just me, but for being a dime short, I wouldn't worry about it.

Follow Drover's advice. Pay no attention to anyone that "wouldn't worry about it".

After years of inferior politically connected firms with crap software for linking license plates to toll violators the Toll Authority finally has a firm that knows what they are doing matching violators. They send the fines out with an image of the car and they have good cooperation from the rental car companies.

If you go to the Toll Authority site you can fill out the info and pay the amount you missed, no hassles or extra fees. If you do not do that you will eventually see a big fee charged to your credit card by the car rental firm that is passing on the fines from the firm that the Toll Authority used to process violations.

If you do not know the exact location of the tolls you've missed they will credit any payment to any violations so long as you are in the correct time frame: Unpaid Toll (http://www.illinoistollway.com/portal/page?_pageid=133,2008701&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTA L - broken link)

If he hasn't paid by now, it's too late.
