I agree with this. Everyone I know who left Illinois was in middle to upper middle class, not lower middle class and poor. We left in 2016 and make over $150k. All my neighbors also left between 2013-2016 and all make well over $150k also. I find it hard to believe that the poor would leave Illinois since it's easier for the poor to get benefits in Illinois than in other states.

It's fine to have opinions, but the data for high-income households for IL and Chicago say otherwise:

Data are also not super encouraging for NW Indiana:

County income stats not encouraging outside Hamilton County

Whether this is good or bad can be debated, but those are the data despite anecdotes.

The data is showing that high income earners are moving to Illinois because nobody in their right mind with a low income would move here. Illinois is definitely driving out the lower classes, but as I've stated in the other forums all of the people that I know leaving are leaving because they are intelligent and have a high income. People who have realized that they have a choice and they are choosing not to spend all of their hard earned income to pay back pensions that were drained by crooks. And get ready for higher taxes and other taxes on anything and everything. Somebody has to pay back all this money... and unfortunately it's going to be those who live in IL.

A taxing year ahead: Expect to pay more for your home, parking, water and more - Chicago Tribune

Illinois' population is dropping. The state's prime tool to lure jobs, Edge tax credits, expired on Jan. 1. Employment growth has slowed. The pile of unpaid state bills has passed the $11 billion mark. The budget for state colleges and universities and many social services agencies ended on Jan. 1.

At least as bad, a new report by Standard & Poor's says that Illinois revenues now have turned negative, with the state running $732 million, or 6.3 percent, below budget so far in fiscal 2017—worse in dollars than any other state, and larger on a percentage basis than any states except oil-dependent Oklahoma and North Dakota.

Why anybody chooses to put up with this is beyond me.

You have anecdotal experiences no doubt of people in your same socioeconomic tier (often these are even people of your own similar political persuasion).

Which was precisely my point. You can debate the positives/negatives of the socioeconomic shift, but they data say (for better or for worse) that higher-income households are increasing in Illinois.

Right, but if you actually read those articles you'll possibly grasp the horrible shape IL is in and open your eyes to why high earners would want to flee.

The source of the information in that article is a South African "investment firm". It is literally not worth the paper it is printed on.

Tonight Fox news Chicago had an editorial on the fiscal state of Illinois, with no budget. The numbers are real. Illinois worst in the U.S. for property taxes, lost over 100k residents from July 2015-July 2016. Over $11 billion unpaid bills, etc. Anyone who disagrees is just in denial. Click on the link and watch.
