It's my understanding at the moment, Illinois gov pensions are NOT taxed by the Fed or State. Unfortunately, California gov pensions are fully taxed. If I move back to Illinois, will my "out-of-state" pension be taxed in Illinois?

Pension and Social Security is not taxed in Illinois. I lived out of state and never had the pension taxed. My kid lives in CA. I will ask.

Linicx, I know CA pensions are taxed in CA. My wonder if my CA pension be taxed in IL if I move back to IL. The other poster, you're right. Social Security is almost gone....gov pensions are next.

Thanks. My pension is from the County of Orange in CA. I would like to return to my hometown of Chicago.

I'm 99% sure the answer is that they will not be taxed. I believe where the pension is housed is not important but rather where you are legally domiciled.

My real world example:

My mother-in-law had a pension through Cook County, where pensions are not taxed. She moved to California, and her pension was taxed. When she moved back, it was not. She also owned a residence in CA, while she did not in IL, but because she was legally domiciled in IL, the taxes were eliminated.

Logically (and as a caveat, logic is often trumped by legalese when it comes to taxes), I would think the same type of change would apply to your situation going the other way.

Relevant statement from CA as of 2010 can be found here:

http://www.ftb.ca.gov/forms/2010/10_1005.pdf

See page 4, Non-Residents of CA Receiving a CA Pension. It doesn't look like it's taxed.
