Some pics from Matthiessen State Park yesterday. Took advantage of the warm temps (not as warm as today though) to get some early-season hiking done. Hiked about 3-4 miles, all above the dells, the lower dells were still pretty wet from all the melting snow and recent rainfall. In late summer or early fall you can hike down in the canyons and theyre bone dry.

Oddly enough there was ice still in certain areas of the canyon, no doubt caused by water trickling out of the limestone cracks. You could hear big crashes every once in awhile from melting ice plummeting down into the canyons, pretty neat.

Steve, I love the nature shots! What kind of snakes are pictured? How many did you find total? That view of the city from the freeway is what I love about Chicago.

Thanks Josh! We found 6 snakes total. One garter, 4 brown snakes (Storeria dekayi) and one redbelly.

Great snake pics, you must have nerves of steel to get that close to them.

Thanks.

No "nerves of steel" though. Theyre 100% harmless and more gentle than most puppies. The pic of the garter snake doesnt show my brother holding him. He just sat there and allowed several pics to be snapped w/o a care in the world.
