We have been looking to move maybe west of Rockford. We've checked out Westlake Village; Lake Summerset is nice also. We had a real estate take us around the Freeport area - some nice homes in the Cherokee Hills area -We would like to be just out of town though - not right in the thick of things. Not sure of any of the smaller towns out that way - we just want a little quieter bit of living - been in the city all our lives and want a change. Any information will be appreciated.
Thank you.

I lived in Freeport for 12 years. Cherokee Hills is on the West side of town in a nice area. Its on the outskirts of the city on the NW side of town.

The schools are excellent, and the people are very down to Earth.

You'd be close enough to go into Chicago for a weekend or day trip. Madison, WI is close as well and is a very nice town.

Default West of Rockford?

Hello-I grew up in Freeport, and it's a pretty nice town. It's school district is just like any others, having their own set of problems. As a product of the Freeport School System, I'd say that it was adequate. It's done me okay. I don't know what your timeline is, but there is supposed to be a subdivision being built on Freeport's east side, near Hwy. 20. Can't say what the quality of the houses will be, but if it's your usual vinyl and chipboard, I'd opt to go into town into an older neighborhood, where the homes are better built with better materials. There are some beautiful older homes on the southeast end of town with wonderful people living there. I'd second guess Lake Summerset, I've heard that they may be having problems with their dam and water quality. Good luck in your quest. Doug Bergren

Default Moving to Rockford Area

If you haven't already moved, check out the Rockton area. There are some very nice 'farmettes' - 5 plus acres - on the outskirts of Rockton. Rockton itself is a nice little town running along the Rock River.

Since the original question was asked 08-17-2006, there is a very good chance he or she has already moved.

Default Lake Summerset Dam

From the Lake Summerset March 2010 Board of Directors Meeting
March 2010 Board of Directors Meeting Minutes (http://www.lake-summerset.com/lsa/mar10-bod.htm - broken link)
"Dam Inspection – The 2009 dam inspection report is back from the engineering firm, Mead & Hunt. No material defects were noted in the inspection and Manager Wilke has executed the required filings with IDNR Dam Safety Division. Copies of the report have been provided to Board members and the chairman of LPC, as well as a copy placed in the office lobby as a “library” reference for members."

re: water quality.... it tastes just fine....

Overall Lake Summerset is very attentive to the tap and lake water quality
