I am being relocated to the Chambana area for my job in about 10 days. My wife and I have been searching diligently for about a month now, online and in person a few weeks ago, for a house to rent in either St. Joseph or Mahomet. We feel like we have been banging our heads against the wall because we just can't find anything. I've been an active user of city-data for a while now and know how helpful its members can be. If there is anyone out there that can help please let me know. We are looking for at least a three bedroom for less than $1000.

There really aren't alot of houses for rent in St. Joseph. The ones that are rentals usually stay that way and don't turn over very often. If you get a chance to pick up a copy of The Leader, it would be a good place to find a rental in St. Joe, Ogden, Homer, Sidney areas, as it is the 'local' paper here and usually has some listings in it. It is only printed once a week but it might be helpful. Good Luck! I hope you find something that works for you!

Did you find anything? We are moving there in the spring too. Do you like it there?

Champaign is a college town. Vacancies are open generally between the first of June and the first of August and possibly after first semester ends. You take your chances the rest of the year. Most families do not move in winter nor during the school year.

Your partner may have to leave you be behind to start a new job and look for a place for your fmily to live.

it is never a question of like. Champaign is where all the action is in Eastern Illinois. it is in the prairie and the prairie is in the midst of massive bean and corn fields as IL is the #1 and #@ producer of said crops as well as being a large exporter of hogs and cattle. St. Louis, Champaign, Springfield, Bloomington, Peoria and the Chicago area are the most populated areas in the State. The balance of the state is divided by farms, small towns, farm towns, dying towns, recreation areas, Illinois Ozark Mountains, forested areas, orchards. etc.. The economy has not treated Illinois residents any better than any other state.

When you find a place be sure to check you neighbors. I've had bad experiences in Mahomet with my neighbors being college students who like to party a lot. Fun at times but defintely not on a wednesday night.

Are you looking for Mahomet or just around Mahomet?

St. Joe's on the opposite side of Urbana and is quite a haul from Mahomet?

Or is that sort of your range?

I know if you're willing to go a pinch further west, Monticello is a beautiful town with a great school district. My wife and I, lived just outside Monticello for 5 years and still own our home there.

I would check realtor websites, I know the one we were using in the past also handled rentals as well, maybe you'll get some luck there.

I have lived in mahomet for about 15 years now and this is what I have to say about it:
The property taxes are high, the people are snobby, the schools are excellent, it's a blooming town that's is finally expanding, low crime, clean, it's also boring, lack of shopping centers like malls, department stores, walmart BUT it is decently close (8 miles) to champaign so you have easy access to shopping centers and entertainment.
