In my opinion, the contractors who hired them should be held accountable, not the taxpayers. It’s high time these crooks are made to pay for their decision to violate the law.

"They called us heroes while we were working and we also felt like heroes. Now they have pushed us aside," said the 40-year-old from Medellin.
Sanchez will join 200 other undocumented 9/11 cleanup workers Tuesday at a rally to push for continued health coverage and legal immigration status.
The workers say they are grateful for federally funded medical care they get but are afraid it could vanish without mandatory funding.
"At any moment...they could cut our benefits, and take this away from us," said Jose Gaviria, 59, another Colombian immigrants.

I have seen several interviews of these immigrants who worked to clean up Ground Zero. They volunteered their time. As I understand, they were not paid. They wanted to give back to the community from the many blessings they received in this country...a job.

This is the first time I’ve heard that. Do you have a link?
interesting... so they volunteered for the job, now they are sick, they currently receive medical Tx, but fear losing said benefits thru deportation...
sticky situation.
would illegal farm labor exposed to harsh chemicals be treated the same way? illegal janitors. people working at processing plants illegally? where would it end.
maybe a one time repreive for these people who helped at ground zero would be in order. it just might be the humane thing to do. they benevolently helped clean and clear ground zero. i dont think i would have. to cast them off would be a bad move.
the other option is to deport them but still provide some form of compensation/medical assistance, similar to what others are recieving here in the US. that money might be longer and stronger in their home country.

hmmm
Good points. We still don’t know if these particular illegals were volunteers, or if they were hired by a contractor. In any case, you are right. Where would it end? I don’t believe we should reward them with citizenship. If their motives were truly altruistic, they shouldn’t expect to be rewarded. However, they are now DEMANDING legalization, which IMO, is suspect.

Legalization is not the answer. That's like saying milk made me sick so now I want to own a cherry farm. Exactly, makes no direct correlation.
If here illegally, they get nothing. If hired by contractors, they should pay for their medical. This is not a federal issue and I wish illegals and their advocates would stop taking time and resources by trying to slither in through another proposed back door by using ridiculous tactics.
I seriously doubt anyone "volunteered" for any length of time. How many of you could volunteer months on end without pay? I'm thinking this is another move by a contractor to make a buck using Illegal Alien labor. The Govt should have made sure anyone working in that environment was protected from the elements. If this is the case sue the contractors.
